Round 4: Spain
Formula One got underway again tonight at Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.
66 Laps of the revamped 4.655 kilometer circuit. All throughout testing it looked like Ferrari was again with the upperhand. News of new parts, new aerodynamic components, new cooling systems, new wing setups, new rear, new sidepods, new winglets.
The experts said it would give the cars 0.5 seconds a lap. Some said as much as a full second per lap advantage over their rivals.
Fast forward to the race weekend and the picture was very different. McLaren locked out the front of the free-practice sessions, both Alonso and the rookie, Hamilton, looking quick - and most importantly, quicker than their red rivals.
However, as repeated many times before, the red cars were sandbagging in practice and it was Felipe Massa for Ferrari who would clinch the Pole Position from Fernando Alonso with a lap of 1:21.421 - just 0.030 seconds quicker than the Spaniard at his home race.
It would be Massa that reigned supreme on race day, with a flawless performance once again from the front of the grid. Also taking Fastest Lap in addition to his win for the second time in a row.
The attrition rate would be high at Spain, with Raikkonen out in the early stages of the GP and joining him in the pit garages would eventually be Heidfeld, Schumacher, Liuzzi, Speed, Trulli, Webber and Wurz. Only 14 out of 22 drivers would see the checkered flag.
01 Felipe Massa Ferrari - Winner
02 Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes - +6.7 secs
03 Fernando Alonso McLaren-Mercedes - +17.4 secs
04 Robert Kubica BMW - +31.6 secs
